Cannas are a hardy perennial. Planted in zones 8 through 10, they may be left in the ground year-round. Zones 7 and below the rhizomes should be dug up to winter indoors. Cannas will grow year-round as houseplants indoors with the right conditions.

Cannas love the heat and humidity of summer, and the best place for them is in full direct sun. If placed in part shade areas, they will grow less tall and may not bloom, so pick a location that gets maximum sunlight.

Canna bulbs can be expensive so starting from seed is a great money-saving way to add these giants to your garden. Canna seeds will need soaking and scarification before they will germinate. When started from seed, these plants will grow from 1 to 3 feet tall during their first growing season and produce a rhizome by the end of the season. These rhizomes will quickly reproduce year after year.

Cannas are drought and deer tolerant and stand firm in high winds. Very easy to care for. They work great as natural boards as well as in pots.
