Butterfly weed is a hardy perennial in zones 3-9. Plant in the fall for midsummer blooms. These seeds must have a cold period (stratification) to germinate. Store in the refrigerator for 30 days if fall/winter outdoor planting is not an option. This plant is a first-year bloomer from seed. It does take a second season to get large and bushy. A monarch magnet help save the monarchs; this is the egg-laying and food supply for monarch caterpillars. It is fascinating to watch these plants nourish the next monarch generation. This butterfly weed will grow 25 to 36 inches tall when mature—plant in a full-sun location. Not picky about its soil, get plants for clay and hard-to-grow areas. Split for more plants in season 3.
